Rt. Hon Chief Goodluck Nanah Opiah was born on 2nd February, 1964 to the humble family of late Elder Opiah and Mrs. Comfort Opiah of Umueke-Ogboru, Abacheke- Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria.As a lad, Rt. Hon. Chief Opiah exhibited untainted avidity for Western education. Hence, very early in life, he was enrolled by his parents at the Abacheke Primary School Egbema, where he had an outstanding academic performance, such that he was loved by all.
In 1977, he was admitted into Egbema Secondary School, where he obtained the West African School Certificate in flying colours and later proceeded to the prestigious Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Port Harcourt, wherein he bagged a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree in Business Administration in 1987.
After graduation, Rt. Hon. Chief Goodluck Nanah Opiah had a remarkable stint in the private sector before joining politics. He served in various positions of trust and proved himself to be an astute manager of human and material resources. From 1991 to 2003 when he joined politics, he had worked meritoriously with Bewac Auto Product Plc, an automobile firm in Nigeria, criss-crossing from one branch to another. From a humble beginning as a Senior Sales Executive with the UTC Nigeria Plc, Port Harcourt-Rivers State, he ascended to the post of General Manager, Bewac Auto products Plc, Port Harcourt.
When in 2003, the people of Ohaji /Egbema Constituency were in dire need of a patriot, selfless and committed person to represent them in the State legislature, they beckoned on him to “come over to Macedonia and help them”. Aware of the onerous responsibility attached to this clarion call by his people, Rt. Hon. Chief Goodluck Opiah, who is a strong believer of axiom, “charity begins at home”, stepped out and won convincingly, the 2003 election to represent his people in Imo State House of Assembly.
As a legislator, Rt. Hon. Chief Opiah has incontrovertibly justified the confidence reposed in him by his people. Apart from sponsoring many people oriented motions, he also sponsored the bill prohibiting discrimination against persons infected with HIV/AIDS at work places and Institutions. He also midwifed the establishment of Imo Oil Producing Areas Development (ISOPADEC) through the sponsoring of a bill to that effect. Today, ISOPADEC is fully operational.
Between 2003 and 2007, he was Chairman and member of various House Committees and Ad-hoc Committees in the House. He was the immediate Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Industry and Tourism; Chairman, Transport Committee; Chairman, Petroleum Committee etc.
In line with the popular axiom that “reward for hard work is more work “, Rt. Hon. Chief Goodluck Opiah was again overwhelming elected to represent Ohaji/Egbema Constituency in Imo State Legislature in 2007. Considering his unanimously impeccable track record and leadership attributes, his Honourable colleagues unanimously elected the 8th Honourable Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly without a dissenting voice on June 5, 2007.
Rt. Hon. Chief Goodluck Opiah, an avid reader, swimmer, writer and tourist, is happily married to Mrs. Florence Opiah. The marriage is blessed with four lovely children.
