Ohakim solicits closer ties with Nigerian Army
Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State has called for stronger ties between the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for the total elimination of kidnapping in the South East.

Speaking on the occasion of the 2009 West African Social Activities (WASA) organized by the headquarters of the 34 Brigade, Owerri, the governor regretted that the worrisome issue of kidnapping, hostage taking and other violent crimes had continued to retard the development of the zone.

Represented by his Special Adviser (Security) Sir George Egu, Ohakim however paid glowing tributes to both the G.O.C of the 82 Division, Army and the Commander of the 34 Brigade, Owerri for their impressive port to the governors of the South-East in the onslaught against hoodlums and urged them to sustain zeal.

The Governor also advised the national armed forces to continue to abide strictly to its professionalism by maintaining the nation’s territorial integrity for democracy to flourish; assuring that his administration would continue to support the 34 Brigade within available resources.

Commander, 34 Bridge, Brigadier-General D. B. Shaljaba in his address, recalled the historical formation of the West African Social Activities (WASA) explaining that it was aimed to bring officers, soldiers and their families together celebrate the end of a successful year and to usher in a New Year, full of hopes and challenges.

“Equally it is used to foster interaction among all cadres of the army and members of the civil community in a relaxed environment,” stressing that the year under review witnessed a lot of training activities as directed by the headquarters, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery and 82 Division Training Directive respectively. General Shaljaba listed the drastic reduction of the menace of army robbery, assassinations and kidnapping in the state by the joint military and the police patrol as well as the assistance of the Emergency Plan Implementation Committee (EPIC) on HIV/AIDS and the Presidential Committee on Barracks Relations (PCBR), Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in giving the medical centre of the barracks a facelift as among the achievements of the brigade in 2009.
