Adequate Information can reduce Hiv/Aids- Ohakim
The wife of the Governor of Imo State, Barr Chioma Ohakim has said that adequate awareness about HIV/AIDS infection could help in reducing its devastating effect on humanity.

Barr Ohakim stated this during a one-day sensitization workshop for Imo women on HIV/AIDS organised by the Imo State chapter of the National Women Coalition on AIDS (NAWOCA) and Empowerment for Women and Youth Initiative (EWAYI) with the support of Imo State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA) at the FSP Hall, Mbari, Owerri.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Nkechi Osondu said that Nigeria ranked third in the world in having a great prevalent rate in all the states.

She stressed that the workshop was aimed at re-awakening the consciousness of rural people especially women on the fight against HIV/AIDS as it affects them most and forging a way to reduce the trend.

Barr Ohakim assured that her pet project, EWAYI in collaboration with NAWOCA and SACA will continue to provide support to the upliftment of womanhood and youths, just as she commended the large turnout of women to the workshop and urged them to teach others about the virus.

In her lecture on the topic “Basic facts and prevention of HIV/AIDS”, Dr Rose Adiukwu enumerated ways the disease can be contacted pointing out that unprotected sexual intercourse carried about 85 percent transmission.

Dr Adiukwu maintained that people living with HIV/AIDS can still live normal and longer lives with proper medication, nutrition, and care. She advised mothers and young girls to always uphold the dignity of womanhood and avoid acts that could lure them to be infected.

Dr Jane Chukwukere in her lecture entitled “Care and support of people living with HIV/AIDS” mentioned different groups such as orphans and vulnerable children, people living with HIV/AIDS and support group of people living with HIV as avenues such people attract support and counselling from government and donor agencies.

Dr Chukwukere called for regular HIV/AIDS test and counselling by women to prevent the spread of the disease while love, care, and support should be given to people living with the virus rather than stigmatization to enhance their chances of living a longer life.

The workshop featured a question and answer section.
