Ohakim Commends Women
The wife of Imo State Governor, Barr Chioma Ohakim made the remarks in a message she sent to the 2010 International Women’s Day celebration held in the State at the Cenotaph ground, Owerri.
Barr Ohakim whose address was read by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Anagam Ononuju expressed concern that despite the important roles of women in the society, marginalization still stares them in the face.
She noted that women are given wrong perception especially in the rural areas which she noted, regrettably affected their advancement.
The Governor’s wife expressed joy on the State Government’s recognition of women through appointment of many of them into decision making positions, noting that it was in line with the United Nations 30 percent Affirmative Action Recommendation as well as the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women among others.
Barr Ohakim described the theme of the year’s celebration, “Equal rights, equal opportunities, progress for all” as unique as it will help women to achieve their potentials.
She enumerated her efforts towards the emancipation of women through empowerment, cash grants, workshop amongst others adding that the task of promoting the welfare and rights of women needs concerted efforts.
Chairman of the occasion and Permanent Secretary of Judicial Service Commission, Barr Ama Eluma said that women have continued to make their marks in the chosen career of endeavour and thanked the State government for recognising and appreciating the potentials of women.
In her lecture, a former Commissioner for Education in the State, Dr Gloria Chukwukere said the event called for re-assessment and evaluation of the achievements of women in the society.
Dr Chukwukere who narrowed the theme down to Imo women, enumerated empowerment, soft loans, awareness rallies, and workshops as areas government has given women relevance and implored women to also support one another for success.
In his lecture on the topic “Alternative Dispute Reolution” Barr Eze Ngakwe said that women are noted for the roles they play in facilitating peaceful co-existence among people.
More than 100 indigent women from the 27 local governments of Imo State were empowered with materials ranging from sewing machines, grinding machines, garri frying pans, and cash.
The occasion also featured agricultural exhibitions and match past by women.
