Igbos must chart a new course – Ohakim
The governor of Imo state Dr. Ikedi Ohakim has declared that the Igbo nation must take stock and change strategy after 40 years of civil war, even as the Nigerian Federation approaches 50 years of independence.

Governor Ohakim made this call in Owerri while addressing who-is-who in Igbo land who attended the Conference of Igbo Leaders at the Concorde Hotel, Owerri.

In a moving speech at the occasion, Governor Ohakim said that as a major nationality in the Nigerian Federation, Ndigbo must have a vision where they want to place the nation among the community of ethnic groups in Nigeria in the next 50 years than “dissipating energy in the singsong of the woes of yesterday”.

He maintained that the current generation in Igbo land expects inspiration from the new crop of leaders than lamentations of marginalization.

“They expect us to show them how to deal with the present challenges and how to survive the next 50 years”, Ohakim said.

He maintained that though terrible things happened during the civil war, but Ndigbo should not be perpetually remembered as a people who lost a war.

“Let the world remember us as a people who rebounded from terrible war to become world beaters again”, the governor told Igbo leaders.

He disclosed that Ndigbo stand on a threshold of new era, even as the world is changing, adding that it was shameful that the institutions built by the Igbo forefathers are today in ruins, pointing out that it was high time the new generation in Igbo land stood up to the daunting challenges ahead.

Present at the occasion includes Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Arthur Nzeribe, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Governors Peter Obi and Theodore Orji, Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, among others.
