Speaking during an interactive section held with the Imo State Traditional Rulers at Concorde Hotel, Owerri recently, Governor Okorocha emphasized on the need to drive the government to the grassroots in order to achieve proper community development.
According to him, the State government will release some money to the community councils as subvention aimed at fostering a smooth running of the 4th Tier of government which shall be governed by traditional rulers.
He noted that the law backing the establishment of Council government which is enshrined in the constitution has been ignored for years, adding that the decision to establish a Fourth Tier of government in Imo State was passed into law by the State House of Assembly.
Speaking further, Governor Okorocha maintained that the present administration would go a long way
to transfer leadership to traditional rulers in the State who would be held responsible for every action in their various communities, adding that such step would create a healthy competition among the monarchs.
He classified the composition of the Council government to include the monarch as its head, office of a
secretary, one youth and a woman leader, both of whom are to be elected using the system of option A4.
The governor however commended the efforts of the traditional rulers so far but warned that each community must meet the requirements that certifies a people to be a community, which includes ownership of a Community Church hall, a market whose size should be at least one thousand square meters, an administrative unit of up to ten rooms in addition to a basic population of five thousand people.
Any community that fails to meet up with the requirements mentioned, according to the governor, would be scraped.
In a remark, the Chairman, Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri congratulated Governor Rochas Okorocha for his well deserved victory at Appeal Court and for the provision of adequate security in the State which ensured the safety of Imo citizens who returned home for the last Christmas celebration.
Also present at meeting were the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Ben Uwajimogu, the Secretary to the Imo State Government, Professor Anthony Anwuka, the Imo State Deputy Governor, Sir. Jude Agbaso among others.
