Imo State Government has extended its free education programme to university undergraduates of Imo State origin studying in the State-owned university (Imo State University, Owerri). Also included in the free education scheme are indigenes of Imo State who are studying in the State-owned Polytechnic.

Addressing the people of the Imo State at the Heroes’ Square, New Owerri yesterday through a speech tagged “State-of-Imo Address”, the Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha stated that the State government would in the next academic session, grant the sum of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) as bursary allowance to each student of Imo State origin studying in the State university and eighty-thousand naira ( N80,000) to all students in the State-owned Polytechnic who are indigenes of the State.

According to the Governor, the reforms in the school system would also entail the monetization of the current free education whereby each recipient from the State-owned university would get the sum of seventy thousand naira (N70,000) free and thirty thousand naira(N30,000) as a loan to be paid upon completion of studies but with no collateral attached.

For those at OND level in the State Polytechnics said the Governor, the students will get sixty-thousand naira( N60,000), broken down into N40,000 free and N20,000 loan while those at HND level will get eighty thousand naira ( N80,000), broken down into N60,000 free and N20,000 loan.

Speaking further, Governor Okorocha stated that schools in the State would be granted autonomous status to empower principals, head-teachers and their management team towards the provision of administrative and learning facilities aimed at efficiency of services.

He said Government has made extensive reforms in the Health sector including the State’s free Health programme, otherwise known as Health-at -Your Doorstep which would take off in the last quarter of the year 2012.

Contributing, the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ben Uwajimogu, said the House has aligned itself with the development vision of the governor and has approved the sum of two hundred and twenty-four billion naira (N224bn) for a four (4) year development project as well as endorsed a 73% capital budget for year 2012.

In a remark, an elder statesman in Imo State and Chairman of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Paschal Dozie said that he is impressed with the spate of projects going on in the State and called on all Imo people to support the Governor.
