The President, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, has commended the management of the National Youth Service Corps for their various contributions towards the socio-economic development of the nation.
President Yar’Adua stated this in a farewell address presented on his behalf by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Prof. Nnamdi Obiareri at the passing out parade of the 2007 Batch ‘A’ Corps members held at the Dan Anyiam stadium, Owerri.
The President explained that considering the numerous challenges confronting the nation, the Ministry of Youth Development has made remarkable efforts at meeting the needs of Nigeria youths.
He expressed the hope that the Ministry would continue to create a more formidable and united basis for articulating and executing youth policies and programmes in order to draw the youth away from anti social self-destructive activities.
While congratulating the corps members for serving their fatherland creditably, the President urged them to use every available opportunity to exploit and maximize their potentials for self-actualization.
Speaking, the Chairman, NYSC Governing Board and Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Prof. Nnamdi Obiaraeri, outlined different projects embarked upon by the corps members in their various areas of deployment in the state.
Prof. Obiaraeri, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Dorothy Okafor, expressed satisfaction that the corps members, during the period of their service, imbibed some aspects of the culture of the people, which helped them to appreciate the Igbos.
In his remarks, the State Director of NYSC, Obong Paul Atta, said that the corps members, throughout the period, worked relentlessly towards achieving the ideals of the scheme in their areas of deployment.
He thanked the state Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, individuals and organizations that contributed to the realization of the objectives of the scheme in the state.
The highlight of the ceremony was the award of automatic employment to 15 corps members who distinguished themselves throughout their service year. |
